when i think of nina simone, three things come to mind. first of all lauryn hill's line from 'ready or not' 'while you're imitating al capone, i'll be nina simone and defacating on your microphone', then it's 'sinnerman', thirdly the her vocalstyle which is amazing. when thinking of 'cotton eye joe', which is a traditional countrytrack, i (and most people unfortunally) think of the rednex' eurodance version.
so hearing this was a big shocker since i was just looking up a samplesource from layo & bushwacka!'s 'deep south'. so sweetly & elequently done and it sheds more light on a track which i thought i knew but was blatantly wrong on.
