ayumi feat. dozhi-t & dj bass - nothing from nothing

from the '95 ep that hamasaki ayumi did with dozhi-t & dj bass, this sits in a weird position for me. beatwise this is mid 90's eastcoast and pulls it off quite well, but it's strange with someone with that much of a cookievoice to the rhymes, the hooks are sung in her normal pitch of song but the verses sounds like they was revisited by alvin & the chipmunks. but that's just japanese girls, if you want to believe all the pornclips where they all squeel into registers that only can be understood by dogs.

dunproofin - hard to boot

one of my favourite mashups of 2006, dunproofin fused together daft punk's 'digital love' (a track which i really wasn't too fond of in it's original form) and hard-fi's 'hard to beat' (another track that i really wasn't fond of). but fuse them together you have a great track. who would have thought that, anyhow, this is almost hard to dj with but dunproofin sorted that out with his rework that he sorted for his 'greatest hits' collection. you can find that on his blog along with this track

cj lewis - sweets for my sweet

nice 90's one hit wonder from the early part of the decade where jamaica suddenly got a revamp and it started showing both in wiggerculture & in dancemusic. it's not eurodance, but is lumped together with the style of music that is eurodance, same as snap! - the power which is technicly hiphouse but you can go on for ages with that, especially with musicnerds (like me). used the hook from the drifters/the searchers 60's hit with the same name. it's a fun track and always gets play once awhile on like 'hey! remember the 90s' kind of things.

divide & kreate - 7th revelator army

after i heard the killer kelly clarkson/nirvana mashup, divide & kreate had my interest for life. he unleashed this mashup and it's a simple thing, 'seven nation army' mashups has been doing the rounds since it was released but this fused it with one of jack white's influences. the comparison of the lyrical style to the southern blues is undeniable and when playing son house's acapella track 'john the revelator' on 'seven nation army' it's a sure thing.

kelis - young, fresh & new (timo maas remix)

this was a bonafied monster of a remix and it was quite a simple task since timo maas was handed grade a material to work with from chad & pharrell. it was just taking the sounds and effects and timestretching them up, whack a thumping groove under it and slip on a subby bassline. it's a big shame that kelis second album wanderland did not get released in america since it was really good but yunno, virgin execs felt it wouldn't work for the american market so they unleashed the milkshake instead.

velvet girl - velvet

this is the one l-vee tune that riva (dj zki & dobra / jark prongo) never made, does that make sense? sorta, anyhow. this is a cracking uptempo balearic pianotrancer, with a main drumgroove that sounds like it was nicked from 'greece 2000'. the full original instrumental has yet not been released in digital altho lvee knows about the requests of this going up on beatport. what is released digitally is the uk cdsingle which does not feature the instrumental but does include the full thing but vocalized (ugh) and some decent remixes by chiller twist & van bellen.

youtube (note: not the full 9minute track)

ciara - promise (kyaal remix)

ever since i heard the remix kyaal did of petter's storstadsidyll, i peeped out some of his other stuff like his reggae mix of miss dynamite's judgement and ne-yo's sexy love and the one that had me knocked down. his 80's style disco remix of ciara's ballad 'promise', it's sleek, it's fun and it's straight to point and by using & re-creating the original sounds and vibe but on 120 is a surefire win.

go home productions - uptight maggie

mark vidler aka ghp is one of those mashup artists that managed to go from being just a mashupartist into the mainstream doing remix & production work after a number of his booties got attention. he has a huge backcatalog of bootlegs however, the quality hasn't really been high on most but when he does a good one, he knocks it out of the park. with uptight maggie he works the riff of the rod stewart/faces classic into his own rework of the maggie may and then throws on the stevie wonder vocals ontop. it's fits like a glove and becomes one magic track.

the human league - filling up with heaven (hardfloor remix)

with hardfloors remixes 80% of them all follow the same formula. the original with hardfloors 808/909 beats & percussion and acid. this swayed a bit from that, the acidline & bassline is derived from a melody from the original. but other than that, you have a groovy slow hardfloor houser with vocals from philip oakey, the female backup vocals were chucked in the bin. hardfloor who usually work with stuff from the same tempo of the original did so for the vocal mix and did the dub at their usual 120.

ragheb alama - b7in 3alayke

like any modern arabic pop track this follows the same formula, but it's funky and has a damn good bassline, even though they hide it under layers of vocals and percussion.
