led zeppelin - tea for one

the skeletal similarities between this and 'since i've been loving you' is strong but i like both on their own different ways. you can never have too many epic blues groovers, and this one which has some of biggest guitarwanking that jimmy page has ever done (now, that is going to be refuted, but i stand by it). for the first time listener, you don't know what hits you if you only hear the tiny bit in the beginning.

jurassic 5 - thin line (feat. nelly furtado)

after h&m used minnie riperton (r.i.p.)'s classic 'les fleur' in their 2008 spring ads i got reattached to the track again and i remembered 'jazz music', the gangstarr track that sampled the beginning bars so i went on wikipedia. i saw that jurassic 5 also used it, so i peeped the track out on youtube and i loved the track. charlie 2na & zaakir's verses summarized a number of relationships for not just me but some mate of mines aswell.

spånka nkpg - how is your father?

from swedish house collective spånka's second album/compo, this is a chunky excursion that kicks into gear from the getgo. driven by a funky bassline, the track features some nice spacey chords and some vocalsamples.

cocteau twins - millimillenary

i got into this one after hearing the small sample on ishkur's guide on a loop, really good track. really like the guitar, but cocteau twins managed to nail the hazy/fuzzy guitar sound in most of their tracks and nice & mellow, something to gaze at the reeboks at.

nina simone - cotton eye joe

when i think of nina simone, three things come to mind. first of all lauryn hill's line from 'ready or not' 'while you're imitating al capone, i'll be nina simone and defacating on your microphone', then it's 'sinnerman', thirdly the her vocalstyle which is amazing. when thinking of 'cotton eye joe', which is a traditional countrytrack, i (and most people unfortunally) think of the rednex' eurodance version.

so hearing this was a big shocker since i was just looking up a samplesource from layo & bushwacka!'s 'deep south'. so sweetly & elequently done and it sheds more light on a track which i thought i knew but was blatantly wrong on.

placebo - bruised pristine

this was their breakthrough single, was played on radio and mtv quite a lot. it was hard getting past brian molko's pitch of voice in the beginning. i was put off a lot by that and it took a while to just ignore the whiny element. anyhow, it was also weird because when you go off with a highpaced single it was weird to see them later doing the more mellow stuff but killer song none the less.
