cm - dream universe (tilt's eastern storm remix)

i think this is probably one of my favourite trancers of all time, it's got a bit of marino stephano, a bit of tilt's progtrance magic, some nice (but also utter cliched) asian samples and put together awesomely. you don't think it's a remix of dream universe but it's all there if you pay attention. it does use another main melody but stephano's lead is always there in the background backing the main one up. the pads from original are used well in the breakdown and in the coda, where the main lead is given a sly solo spot. it's a well done remix and i still bust it out yet today in sets.

dead can dance - wilderness

discovered this when listening to some netradio where it was used as an interlude. it does provoke that feel but it's also one small yet powerful track. multiple layers of lisa gerrard's vocals doing her usual oldtimey waily gibberish but keeping it in the lower spectrum of pitch.

future prophecies - black dragon

first track i heard by future prophecies was 'september' which is really unoffensive and borderline schmaltzy liquidfunk. when i heard the rest of the warlords rising album it was it quite a shocker since i suspected a whole slew of hospitalsounding schmaltzers. it was a mixed bag but did lean on the darkstep side, some went a bit overboard but this is right on point.

starting with some glitchy cuts and some eiry pads it goes into the karin krog vocal sample which makes from moody into menacing with the atmosphere around it. enter a typical riff and a deep bassline and some crisp drums and you have a cracking tune.

model 500 - the flow (jedi knights remix)

tom middleton & mark pritchard outdid themselves when they did this remix turning in a flipped out hybrid out of electro, techno & funk. served up with vocoders, acid & scratching it's just lunacy.

girls aloud - hoxton heroes

this created quite a stir when the 30second sample was pummelled out to the world via nme's hypemashine. essentially a track by a manufactured girlgroup slating the new slew of 'indie clones', something ryan jarman of 'the cribs' was very vocal about.

the issue of the matter is the new rockbands who all are carboncopies of bands making it big. right after the sample came out, instantly came the nirvanakids* spewing at them, but here is the fun twist. alot of these bands wasn't put together by a group of execs but they might as well been that. making it very justified for girls aloud to do this one, the track does hit a bit soft but does bring up some good points

speedy j - something for your mind (funkstörung remix)

for this one funkstörung rocked out a rework of this classic in only way they can do. the original has a basic concept, first you have the one line from c'hantal's heavily sampled 'the realm' and the end stuttered when rocking out the drums. in 1991 when speedy j did it he used his 909, funkstörung used their breakbeats and effected & distorted them. banging stuff basicly
